Refrigerator is Leaking Water - Snap Supply

Refrigerator is Leaking Water

Refrigerators leaks are a common occurrence and a serious pain. It’s pretty straightforward, however, to identify which part is causing the leak. The parts that are involved are simple to replace. We’ve got some quick instructions on how to get to the bottom of the problem, identify the issue, and quickly make the necessary replacement.

Water Inlet Valve

The water inlet valve is located in the rear access panel in the back of most refrigerators. Accessing it is easy. In some cases, the water valve can become damaged through standard wear and tear. It’s simple enough to inspect a water inlet valve visually for signs of a leak.

How to Troubleshoot a Water Inlet Valve

Note: this process can require a multimeter

  1. Disconnect the refrigerator from its power source.
  2. Find the water valve behind the rear access panel at the bottom of the refrigerator.
  3. Investigate the water valve for any noticeable signs of leakage - cracks, cuts, leaking water, etc.
  4. Ensure all connections are properly secured.
  5. Disconnect and remove the water valve.
  6. Check for blockage at the filter screen.
  7. Test the water valve with the multimeter using the RX1 setting.
    1. Touch probes to the terminals to check for continuity.
    2. You should receive a result of between 200 and 500 ohms.
  8. If you do not receive the expected readings, or if you have located signs of damage that are causing leaking, then your water valve must be replaced.

Don’t forget: just because parts look the same does not mean that they are the same. Make sure to use cross reference information and model numbers to confirm compatibility with your refrigerator.

Refrigerator Door Gasket

The door gasket is the air-tight, vinyl seal designed to keep the cool air in the refrigerator and the warm air out. If this part becomes damaged or defective, excess moisture can develop in the refrigerator, which can result in leaks. Inspect the gasket along the edge of the door for damage to find out if this part is causing your leak.

How to Inspect Refrigerator Door Gaskets:

  1. Disconnect the refrigerator from its power source.
  2. Investigate the gaskets on the refrigerator door and the freezer door, looking for damage including mold, wear and tear, discoloration, etc.
  3. If you find any visible damage, you must replace your door gasket.

Don’t forget: just because parts look the same does not mean that they are the same. Make sure to use cross reference information and model numbers to confirm compatibility with your refrigerator.
