Water Inlet Valve

The water inlet valve is the part responsible for bringing water into the refrigerator and is also responsible for filling the ice maker. These parts are built with screens designed to filter out debris and sediment, preventing it from entering the refrigerator. These screens can become blocked or clogged, preventing water from entering the appliance. Additionally, normal wear and tear can cause problems with an inlet valve.

How to Troubleshoot a Water Inlet Valve:

Note: this process can require a multimeter

1. Disconnect the refrigerator from its power source.
2. Find the water valve behind the rear access panel at the bottom of the refrigerator.
3. Investigate the water valve for any noticeable signs of leakage. Ensure all connections are properly secured.
4. Disconnect and remove water valve.
5. Check for blockage at the filter screen.
6. Test water valve with multimeter using the RX1 setting.
1. Touch probes to the terminals to check for continuity.
2. You should receive a result of between 200 and 500 ohms.
7. If you do not receive the expected readings, then your water valve must be replaced.

Ice Maker

If you have inspected your refrigerator’s water inlet valve and have found that it is in working order and functioning as intended, then there may be an issue with your ice maker. Many common problems that can occur with an ice maker can be visually identified quite easily.  These include problems with the water fill system or the ice maker assembly. To test the most common ice makers found in modern refrigerators, live current is necessary - meaning that this test should only be performed by experienced professionals.

How to Troubleshoot an Ice Maker:

1. Disconnect the refrigerator from its power source.
2. Disconnect the refrigerator from its water source.
3. Open the freezer and inspect the ice maker for visible signs of wear and tear - cracks, leaks, etc.
4. Inspect the ice maker fill tube for build up or blockages.
5. If your ice maker is frozen over, let the freezer defrost to melt the ice.
6. If defrosting the freezer does not change anything, or if the ice maker is visibly damaged, then your ice maker must be replaced.
