Snap Supply's #StopHateForProfit Facebook Boycott
On June 17th, Snap Supply joined thousands of businesses in boycotting Facebook as a part of the #StopHateForProfit movement. Escalating tensions throughout the country exposed Facebook’s ambivalence to the hate and misinformation being spread by a small but vocal number of toxic users on the social media platform -- hate and misinformation that was encouraged by Facebook as a way of exploiting users for more ad money.
This boycott is meant to draw attention to Facebook’s leniency when it comes to the proliferation of hate speech on their platform. The #StopHateForProfit movement demands Facebook make meaningful changes to the way that it moderates hate and violent conspiracy groups on the platform. In addition, the movement asks that Facebook provide basic help for users who experienced harassment while on the platform.
While we have temporarily withdrawn our presence from Facebook -- and encourage other businesses to do so for the month of July -- we would like to make it clear that we are not opposed to the free, organic communication that occurs on Facebook. Social media has very much changed the way we live our lives, in many ways for the better, and we are advocates of freedom of information.
What we and the #StopHateForProfit movement do oppose is the way in which Facebook profits off of hate and misinformation by encouraging certain users to spend time in toxic communities.
On July 1st, we will be posting our stance on this issue on our Facebook account, then we will be going dark again for the remainder of the month. We encourage users to do their own research and sign #StopHateForProfit’s petition for change if they also support the movement.
